Design
Award-winning design and user interface
concept with 'carousel of icons' and large graphic LCD display
Philips' new Xenium 989 GSM mobile phone
offers a unique new user interface concept that makes the phone's
extensive feature set quickly and easily accessible to users. The Xenium
offers an outstanding combination of style, technology and ergonomics.
This new mobile phone is not just a state-of-the-art communication tool,
but a distinctive personal accessory that expresses the user's feeling for
design and sophistication.
Xenium won two 2000 iF Design awards at this
year's CeBIT Hannover exhibition: One for its overall product design and
one for its new 'carousel-based' user interface. These awards recognize
Philips' strengths in end-user focused product design and user interfaces,
which is reflected in the design of the Xenium and other Philips mobile
phones.
Carousel function The new user interface is
a distinctive feature of Xenium 989 that makes operation much easier
than that of conventional mobile phones. As phones become more and
more compact and feature-rich, user interaction is becoming increasingly
important for optimum usability. Xenium 989 answers this need with an
advanced new user interface that offers much easier operation and simple,
intuitive access to the phone's many advanced features. Based on a
'carousel of icons', this new user interface makes a big contribution to
usability of the mobile phone, and even makes it fun for users to explore
all the phone's features for themselves.
The patented carousel function works by
displaying simultaneously up to 5 icons that visually expresses a function
or feature of the phone. The carousel gives instant access to menus for
the various functions, through which the user can navigate intuitively by
just touching the Pilot Key. Self-explanatory smart icons show users
at-a-glance where they are in the menus, and all symbols are shown in an
internationally understandable graphical form for easy,
language-independent use.
Voice command for easy, safe
operation Underlining Philips' leadership position in the application
of voice operation technology, Xenium 989 has a real voice command
capability that makes operation both easier and safer. Philips' latest
Voice Command and Voice Dialing capability allows voice access to key
features on the phone's menu. Calls can be made to any number stored in
memory simply by speaking the name of the person to be dialed. This not
only speeds up and simplifies operation, it also enhances safety during
in-car use of the mobile phone. As well as dialing, Xenium 989 also
recognizes and executes commands from the user, for example to select
specific phone functions, and a voice car kit is optionally available to
maximize driving safety. In addition an active headset will also be
available to optimize safety and comfort. This headset can also be used
for the voice-dialing and voice command functions.
Unique style and finishing What really sets
Xenium 989 apart from other mobile phones is its unique style and
finishing. Most distinctive of all is the electroluminescent blue display
backlight, which gives the product a 'magic touch' and a fresh look. Three
sophisticated metal-plated finishes reflect the owner's preference for an
advanced design concept: Chrome Velours, Cristal Mint, and Black Fantom.
Other useful
features Xenium 989 has the miniaturized dimensions that users expect
from Philips' leading-edge mobile phone technology. Weight is only 99
grams with the standard 900 mAh battery, which gives standby times of as
much as 400 hours or well over 2 weeks. Talk times are from 3 to 6 hours,
depending on conditions of use. Volume of the phone is only 85 cc. Its
exceptionally small size and light weight go one step further than just
easy carrying in a pocket by actually making the phone wearable for
ultimate convenience of access.
Xenium 989 also offers Half Rate (HR) and
Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) coding (where supported by networks), which gives
respectively an enriched coverage during network saturation and a
significant improvement in sound quality.
With the T9TM Text Input software, included in
the Xenium mobile phone, text can be entered quickly and conveniently.
This will enable users to make faster and more easy use of the available
applications, like for example Short Message Service (SMS ).
Emotion icons and other fun
features Further enhancing the phone's convenience and fun value,
Xenium 989 comes with numerous useful and amusing features. Users can add
extra expression to their calls with family and friends by sending
'Emotion Icons' using the GSM Short Message service (SMS) feature. These
icons, sent with text messages just like e-mail attachments, are received
by owners of compatible Philips phones as displayed icons conveying a
range of easily recognizable emotions.
Other useful and fun features of Xenium 989
include a built-in Euro converter, a convenient calculator, an on-board
game, selectable ringers with a melodies editor to create personalized
ringer melodies, and a 20 second Voice Memo function that allows
convenient storage of spoken notes and reminders. A personal organizer
allows convenient planning of meetings and schedules, and call time and
cost meters display the duration or cost of calls. Time and date displays
are constantly active, even when the phone is in idle mode.
